Pulsation & Milking Performance… Simplified

Simply put, pulsation is a mechanical process… a valve opens, it closes, and an outcome occurs.

Unfortunately, most mechanical processes are often complex and technical.  And for that reason, they tend to be somewhat confusing and hard to explain.

So… here’s a visual explanation of what’s really happening inside the inflation when a cow’s being milked.

No, I’m not an artist, but I know someone who is.  And with his help, we’ve created this graphic to show how the four phases of pulsation work.   Hopefully this will help explain how these four phases control the way the milking liner opens and closes in order to get milk out of each quarter.

A-Phase:  The liner opening and milk-flow begins.

B-Phase:  The liner is open and milk is flowing.

C-Phase:  The liner is closing and milk-flow decreases.

D-Phase:  The liner is closed and milk-flow stops.
